Storage and retrieval machine vs. shuttle
Why pallet shuttles are the more flexible alternative
Storage and retrieval machines (SRMs) are essential in intralogistics, and stacker cranes are the most commonly used type. They are robust load carriers that typically travel on rails within an aisle situated between two rows of racks. They are comprised of a chassis, one or two masts, a hoist, and a load handling device, making them suitable for automated handling of both pallets and small parts in containers. Importantly, these machines can operate reliably even at extremely low ambient temperatures of up to -30°C.
Limitations and Constraints of storage and retrieval machines in warehousing
One benefit of utilizing storage and retrieval machines is the ability to achieve high storage density in a compact footprint. However, the need for required aisles can lead to limitations in storage capacity or density. Additionally, the weight of stacker cranes, which can reach several tons, presents significant challenges in warehouse planning, necessitating a specific and complex floor design. Moreover, the high energy intensity of the equipment must be taken into account, despite many systems now utilizing energy recovery. Finally, scalability trade-offs should also be considered.
Pallet shuttle warehouses: A more compact, scalable, and flexible alternative
Ultra-compact, fully automated pallet shuttle warehouses offer several advantages over traditional solutions such as stacker cranes, wide-aisle or narrow-aisle warehouses. They require up to 45% less space than conventional solutions and can be easily expanded by adding shuttle vehicles as needed. Despite their smaller footprint, their performance is comparable to that of a stacker crane warehouse, making them highly efficient and flexible. Pallet shuttle warehouses are an excellent choice for companies seeking to maximise their use of available space and access individual pallets without relying on a channel warehouse.
Moreover, unlike SRMs, these systems only require a simple industrial floor as their base, and the systems can be adapted to fit unconventional spaces. Additionally, the energy requirement for pallet shuttle warehouses is significantly lower than other traditional warehouse solutions.
